New York Experience

How does: NEW YORK / PHOTO EXHIBITS / A DANCE PERFORMANCE / 3 INTENSIVE WORKSHOP DAYS IN LOIS GREENFIELD's NEW YORK STUDIO / PROFESSIONAL DANCERS AS MODELS AND SHOPPING OPPORTUNITIES sound ?
The acclaimed dance photographer LOIS GREENFIELD (www.loisgreenfield.com), who was one of the main guest during Nordic Light Events in Norway this year, invites you to spend a 3 day intensive workshop at her New York studio, where many of her iconic images has been made. You will experience how Lois sets up her shoots and see how she instructs the dancers, lights her shoots, and captures the movements in her signature style.

You will use Lois’s strobe equipment and Hasselblad camera system to capture your own dance images with the guidance of the master. Lois will share her personal technique and also encourages everyone to develop their own creative approach to photographing dance and movements. This will be a hands on experience that you do not want to miss out on.

To get into the creative mood we will start our New York Experience with a day spent exploring New York’s best photo galleries where a representative from NORDphotography will be your gallery guide of the day. We will go as a group, using typical New York transportation like Subway or the yellow cab, and eat lunch and dinner where the locals dine.

THE ITINERARY OF THE WORKSHOP:

Thursday December 3rd:
Arrival-day: The students should arrive in time for dinner which is at 19:00. Lois will meet up with us, at a typical New York restaurant, where we will have a nice evening and get to know one another.

Friday December 4th:
Inspiration day: NORDphotography’s representative will be your gallery guide for the day, and take you around NYC, the New York way, by yellow cab or subway, to the main photo exhibit the city has to offer. At night we are scheduled to see one of New York’s finest dance companies, to get the creative juices flowing before we start our 3 day intensive workshop with Lois Greenfield.

Saturday December 5th:
First workshop Day - shooting in Studio
Photographing professional dancers, you will first learn about and practice the Importance of "timing" in capturing action. The strobe and camera operation as well as lighting set-ups will all be explained before we shoot. We all see the shots the students take on the monitor so corrections and suggestions can be expressed to the dancers and lighting can be adjusted for maximum effect.

Sunday December 6th:
Second workshop day - shooting in studio
The participants will now have confidence directing the dancers and capturing group shots with different backgrounds and lighting set-ups. We will photograph both choreographed as well as improvised moments and incorporate fabrics and props to add to the creativity and the fun.

Monday December 7th:
Third workshop day - post production
We will edit our shots, discussing the different narratives evoked by each "split Second". We will analyze why some shots work and some do not, and the importance of cropping. We explain post production processes and techniques, as well as basic retouching. Everyone will receive lighting diagrams and an information sheet with technical tips. Lois will be happy to review student portfolios.

Tuesday December 8th:
NORDphotography’s representative will take the group to B&H (the largest photo store in New York) and other good shopping opportunities.

You will have the rest of the day to relax or explore the city on your own.

At night we meet up with Lois, her assistant and the dancers we photographed for a goodbye dinner.

Wednesday December 9th:
Departure day.

NOTES

Tickets to New York is at a very low range right now, and there are direct flights (www.continental.com) from Oslo to NYC every day.

The best way to find tickets and accommodation to NYC is by www.finn.no, www.hotels.com or similar services.

Everyday the group will gather at a meeting point agreed on the day before, so that everyone goes together. The meeting point will be easily accessible to everyone, and close to the gallery we are visiting, or Lois’s studio, or stores of the day.
